THE SCOOP ON CHILIFEST
… THE DAY OF…

  • 9 am    Set up can begin.  Drop off can be done on the lower portion of Clarence Street (beside Confederation Park).

  • 11:30 am   Volunteers will start to come around to collect sampling containers for judging. You will be asked at that time in which category you would like to be judged.

    Chili Categories:

    • Tex Mex            Chili meat cut large, not ground, no beans, hot & spicy
    • Family Style       With Beans, mild to semi-hot
    • Vegetarian          Vegetables only. No rules on mild to hot & spicy.
    • Original              No rules
    • Ethnic                 No rules

Please have a sign available with what type of chili and how HOT it is (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 indicating TASTER BEWARE!)

Wondering how much chilli to make? 70 to 75 gallons (about 282 litres, or 6 average sized coolers full). Enough to last all day!

  • 12 pm Gates open to the general public. Attendees will be given a bowl, spoon and sent on their way to sample chili from as many booths as they wish – or digestively possible.  PLEASE KEEP PORTIONS TO A SAMPLING SIZE– it helps ensure that you can sample your chili to as many people as possible.

  • MANY PEOPLE BRING THEIR OWN BOWL, SO PLEASE TRY TO ENSURE THAT YOU ONLY SERVE THOSE THAT HAVE THE CHILIFEST BOWL.

Live music and entertainment begins as soon as the gates open.  There is a children’s area, horse drawn wagon rides, craft tents and much more.

  • 3 pm   The winners of Chili Awards will be announced and prizes distributed.

If you run out of chili early, please do not take down your booth before 4pm.

Advertising

With the help of Downtown Kingston! BIA, the Kingston Whig-Standard and media sponsors like Chum Radio, we have a great promotional package developed.  Everyone participating in Chilifest will be included in promotional materials and print ads.

Promotion

  • Chilifest draws crowds of over 5,000 people if it is a warm day.  We hope it will be a beautiful day and we will reach full capacity!
  • Chilifest can offer an excellent opportunity to promote your restaurant or organization ~ please feel free to give out coupons, menus, pens or any other

tasteful items that you feel would represent your business.

  • Use signage at your gazebo to draw attention to yourself.
  • Please note, no items should be sold unless the proceeds go to Hospice Kingston and proper municipal permits are obtained.

Theme

  • We would love if your gazebo had a theme.  We want this to be fun for you and those in attendance, so be as creative as you can!

Health Unit Requirements

The 2010 KFL&A Health Unit Requirements are enclosed ~ please ensure that your chili meets these requirements as a Health Unit representative will be onsite to ensure standards are being met.  Bring a thermometer to ensure your Chili meets those requirements.  Each restaurant must supply their own ladles.  Special care must be taken to ensure that your ladle, when emptied, does not touch the customer’s bowl.  It would be wise to bring a few ladles… just in case!

We will provide you with:

  • An enthusiastic crowd
  • A 10x10 gazebo tent
  • 1 table
  • Electricity (if you require)
  • Bowls, spoons, judging containers
  • 1 or 2 volunteers to help dish out your chili (if you require)
  • Prizes and awards for outstanding chili maker
